First off I didn’t know any state still used firing squads: http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/17/utah.firing.squad/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnn and in this case I am sure the bastard in question did the crime and his punishment was just. The problem is that I don’t trust the government to get anything right. I don’t trust them to educate any children properly. I don’t trust them to protect my family. I don’t trust them to manage my health care. I don’t even trust them to deliver my mail properly. How in the hell can I trust them to properly convict and execute criminals. I have more thoughts on this that might turn into a whole well thought out post but that’s all I have for the moment. Firing squad…wow!

Man this was one compilation I never thought would so hard to make. I was just going to slap some songs about dads together and call it a day but it took on a life of its own and transformed into this 10 song compilation of songs that remind me of my dad (yes that’s him in the cover picture), make me think about being a father, or speak to my fears about my fatherhood and the failures therein. I stopped at ten tracks because it seemed to be a good point and because I think things were getting a little scary for me. Maybe I should always eat Somas before making mixes. This is little more laid bare than I really wanted to be for a simple belated Father’s Day mix but it might be one of the best mixes I have done in a damn long time or it could be the Soma talking. Anyway here it is for you all to enjoy. Feel free to comment…

Well my vacation did not go off as planned. Due to an misunderstanding on my part we didn’t get the road trip portion of the vacation at all so my five days off were spent at home with the family. Normally this would mean I got some work done around the house and hung out with the clan but the Sunday before last I bent over to set some sugar cookie dough in the fridge to let it set up and lo and behold I managed to pinch my sciatic nerve (a misnomer actually as it is the nerve roots that connect to the vertebrae that are caught and not the nerve itself). So I took some NSAIDs that I had from a previous injury and spent the week mostly lying down and unable to sleep as I react badly to most pain killers. I went back to work on Monday and my back wasn’t that much better so I made an appointment with a new doctor and got prescribed steroids, Soma, and three days off work. This is my first day back at work and while I am not 100% the pain in my back is down the soreness from being twisted into a weird angle for almost two weeks and I can deal with that.

So all this means I missed Father’s Day because I was either incoherent or asleep, didn’t fix up the boy’s room, didn’t go swimming with the kids, and generally just complicated things around the house for my lovely wife. Speaking of my lovely wife: she took care of me in a selfless manner by waiting on me hand and foot and putting up with my complaining and even taking care of cooking dinner which she usually hates doing. She really did take care of me and let me know that it was alright to be injured and try and get better. I cannot stress how much I appreciated her taking care of everything all day every day with the added burden of my gimped up ass laying about the house asking for things. She’s the real deal and she’s all mine!

I hope to get some thoughts together this weekend on my Body and Blood series of posts. I have not heard back from the priest to whom I wrote and am a little upset about that but I think that the search for the truth is more important than a single e-mail so I will keep posting and keep writing to different folks and see where this road takes me. I am putting together a belated Father’s Day compilation but I am not sure my heart is in it so it might never see the light of day but who knows…

You can keep up with the short-but-still-out-of-town-and-away-from-everyone portion on my vacation that starts at the end of work today by following me on foursquare or twitter. You should be able to track me down if you really want.;) In the meantime enjoy this little compilation I threw together to start the drive out of town…

My wife planned a special night for me this weekend and while it was a pain getting all the kids to where they needed to be it was so worth it. No details will be forthcoming but suffice it to say it was memorable. And as I write this, way too late, Diarmuid starts crying. So instead of a list if what I wanted to do but didn’t this is all you get because I have a baby to go get and snuggle.
